Engg students in a fix as firms refuse internships [Jntuworld.com]

HYDERABAD : Engineering students are a worried lot this winter with several companies refusing to allot internship positions to them in their city offices. With the Telangana agitation forcing colleges to cut short their six-month internship projects to just four months, most companies have refused to take students in for such a short period. The internship and a major project work constitute 200 marks of the final semester scores of engineering students.

Students and college managements said that most of the major companies from different fields of engineering, including mechanical, IT and biotechnology have refused internships this year. The company representatives have communicated to the applicants that they will accept only those students who can work for six months. With the Telangana bandhs derailing the academic year, students said that it is impossible for them to spend six months on their internship.

All internships of JNTU students start on December 21. College representatives are in talks with companies and research institutions requesting them to admit students for a short internship period this year. "Internships are a major part of engineering study as it is supposed to help us get on hand experience of working. But this year a majority of the companies and institutions in Biotech field has refused to take us in," said a student from Srinidhi Institute of Sciences and Technology. In biotechnology major research institutes including CCMB, NGRI and IICT have informed student applicants that they will not allow a four-month internship. Even in IT stream companies including Accenture, Mahindra Satyam, Infosys, Cognizant and Wirpo are insisting on a six-month internship period, students said. "The college authorities are lenient enough to accept and internship of four or even three months in some cases, but in the industry a short internship is not acceptable," said a student doing her final year IT stream.

Students said that the short internship period has also restricted their career prospects. "Some of the companies like Accenture were ready to give offers to their internees after a six month internship. As we do not have enough time to spend such companies have refused to take us in," a student said.

College authorities said that they have been trying to convince companies to admit students. "If the internships are to be extended for two more months, students will not get enough time to prepare for their final semester examinations. We have requested institutes to allow them to do internship for four months as affiliating university JNTU has prescribed just a four-month internship," said principal of a college. Meanwhile, students said that they have been losing out on internship offers that come from companies outside the state as JNTU has specified that all major projects should be done from companies located within the city.
